__ With Fehr Clinic, the Stadtspital Zürich Triemli has revolutionized its hospital bed procedures. The fully automated solution integrates seamlessly into the processes, ensures maximum hygiene and reduces the time for dispensing “dirty” and receiving “clean” beds to a minimum.
Project overview
- Two bed storage towers, each with a height of more than 50 m - the highest towers of this type
- Storage capacity of up to 60 beds per tower
- Guaranteed bed access via the FIFO storage principle
- 13 serviced floors with direct access to the bed storage units
- Independent supply and accommodation of beds on all floors
- Hygienic separation: a tower for "clean" and a tower for "dirty" beds
- Separate from passenger lifts for maximum safety
- Increasing staff efficiency by significantly saving time when changing beds
The Stadtspital Zürich Triemli is one of the largest public hospitals in the canton of Zürich. With around 550 beds and about 25,000 inpatient and over 170,000 outpatient patients each year, employees face the challenge of organizing the internal handling of hospital beds efficiently, hygienically and time-saving.
Previous manual processes were highly logistical, led to delays and offered limited flexibility. The aim was therefore to achieve a solution that significantly speeds up operations, meets the highest hygiene and safety standards and at the same time makes the workflows for staff noticeably easier.
Automated bed storage for efficient hospital bed logistics
With Fehr Clinic, a completely integrated solution for the automated handling of hospital beds was realized at the Stadtspital Zürich Triemli. At the heart of the complex are two bed storage towers over 50 meters high – the highest systems of this type. One tower is designed for clean beds and the other for dirty beds, which ensures consistent hygienic separation of processes.
The towers serve a total of 13 floors of the hospital. On each floor, beds can be independently turned in and resumed. Access is via a FIFO storage principle, which ensures structured and traceable storage. Up to 60 beds can be stored per tower.
The bed bearings are fully integrated into the building infrastructure and have been installed with millimeter-accurate precision in the prefabricated building shafts. Ergonomically designed transfer stations on each floor ensure efficient and hygienic process connection to hospital operations.
On the bottom floor is a centralized laundry, which serves as a process interface between the two towers. The entire system is deliberately separated from the passenger lifts, which additionally increases safety, hygiene and process stability.

Project implementation from planning to commissioning
Planning and integration of automated bed storage
In close cooperation with architects and hospital planners, the automated bed storage was already taken into account during the construction phase. This enabled the system to be optimally adapted to the spatial conditions and to be seamlessly integrated into the hospital’s logistical processes from the outset.
Precise installation of bed storage towers
A special highlight was the installation of the more than 50-meter-high steel structures in the prefabricated shafts of the new building. In parallel to the assembly of the modules, the bed storage towers were built. Ergonomics, safety and efficiency were the main focus throughout the installation process.
Efficient hospital bed logistics in daily operation
The system is installed in stages and is gradually put into operation. On each floor, separate entrances for “clean” and “dirty” beds allow a hygienic and quick process. The laundry on the lowest floor forms the central interface between the two towers – a perfectly coordinated interplay of technology and organization.
Commissioning and training of hospital staff
After successful system tests and training of hospital staff, the facility is officially handed over. The Fehr Bed Tower is thus immediately ready for productive use and ensures maximum efficiency, hygiene and safety in daily hospital operations.
